Others, not so much. Reading "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" was a lot of work; the movie remains true to form. Woe to the viewer who allows her mind to wander if even for a short minute. The plot may be based on real events but the action is minimal as the story is retold from the future with the more colourful bits appearing in flashback. The dialogue is loaded with information; one must attend to it or get left behind. Things pick up a bit in the second half but still, not my idea of an entertaining film. George Smiley fans will be pleased.
Welcome to Maricopa County! We know about Sheriff Joe who takes a hard line with prisoners, dressing them in prison stripes and sending them to manual labour in the communities. Now that hard line is taken to schools and truancy. Students are required to attend till 16 or the end of grade 10, and if they don't attend regularly, can be taken to court for missing as few as 5 days. If they miss 10% or 18 days, they can't earn a passing grade for the course. Failure to improve attendance may result in the inability to get a drivers license until age 18. Parents may face fines or jail time if they fail to get their kids to attend. Interesting, but effective? I'm not sure such rules would make any difference for school-hating teens.
Sincerely enjoying the price of good wine! Wonderful libations, daily.
I loved Le Carre's books and look forward to the movie - looks like a good cast. Le Carre himself is very boring to listen to, and it could be I'd not like the books anymore either. Taylor's dad apparently got the mini- series for Christmas which is likely a better format.
ReplyDeleteAs to holding youth legally responsible to attend school, or their parents, they might want to look to relevance and engagement while they're at it, just in case there's a little something that could be done. I don't know where Maricopa County is, but I guess its much the same as anywhere else.
so glad you're having such a great time. So many movies,so little time is my motto.
About truancy: Jail time for the parents? Seriously? That seems a bit extreme, and pointless. I’d be really surprised if that actually helps. Not sure how that will encourage a teen who has already checked out to check back in, or to feel connected.
ReplyDeleteYour post made me interested in this "Sheriff Joe" which led to a google search, of course. He seems pretty tough. I don't think I like the idea of mugshots being posted online daily of those arrested, and voted on to become the "Mugshot of the Day." It just seems wrong on so many levels.
I rented Margin Call last night, and agree... a really good movie, and bad, bad eyebrows. ;-)
Enjoy your good wine, and warm temperatures. Back at home... heavy rainfall warning in effect. I think you’ve got the better scenario there in Arizona.
Trying out Geoff's new instructions...
