My dates are wrong on this one. We golfed on Dec 29 with these guys but saw "Marilyn" on Thursday after our Apache Trail trip, I think! Ah, holidays. Who cares, really? Just know, we did it all!
Geoff and I golfed with two US Military fellows in Scottsdale; one had been with the army in Afghanistan working as a "Hurt Locker" type of mine de-activator, the other as a fireman on a naval transport vehicle. The former is now assigned to the President for security--he goes in to sites prior to the president's visits. It's not quite as dramatic as the movie, he said, but it is the same stuff. They talked about incentives the military offers its soldiers to sign up for another term, enough to put down a nice deposit on a home, for example. Wouldn't want to replicate the American system but it gives purpose and pride to a lot of young people who might otherwise find it tough going to college or finding meaningful work.
Met a couple from the Tri-Cities who golf at Carnoustie--Rick and Carol Gaetz. They were in the group ahead of us at Starfire. Geoff spotted the Pitt Meadows logo on his shirt. We had a beer with them after golf and discovered some people in common: Dawn and Bob Crevier, Bill Anderson, the Hales, and Rick's ex-wife whom Geoff knew from working in Burnaby! A small world moment. Wonder if we we will meet anyone we know in Havesu.
Got home in time for an afternoon movie before dinner. Saw My Week With Marilyn. Quite an intriguing flick. Michelle Williams is great in the role. Anyone can see why men would be enamoured of Marilyn, but really, that breathless, ceaseless giggling gets old. The movie is just a snapshot but illustrates rather well the difficulty she had separating herself from the illusion she knew exactly how to create.
Will try to rate it after our last show in Scottsdale.
Interesting stuff Terry. To add a little American pie to it, my older brother
